In 1934, an anonymous fan sent in a short tale to Amazing Stories magazine, detailing an encounter he had with creatures similar to the description of Richard Sharpe Shaver's lifelong enemies, the Deros.
"Dero" is a portmanteau of "detrimental" and "robot" of which they are neither. The name describes their broken nature, giving into their sinful and glutinous pleasures. Abducting and eating people, using technology that is centuries old to perform unusual torture, and laying to waste anybody who stands in their way... Until they met Fred Crisman Crisman escaped this first scenario. The story is vague, and can be seen as multiple encounters, however Crisman has not publicly announced that it's him in the story. It is to be assumed, based on the writing style and the fact that he eventually gets in contact with Raymond Palmer, who was the editor of the magazine at the time. |
A Dero.
